Increase pensioner payments to R5000
Increase pensioner payments to R5000
The Issue
My mother has worked hard her entire life. She dedicated over 40 years to teaching young minds, molding future generations, and contributing to the development of our nation. Yet, now that she is retired, the pension she receives barely covers her basic needs. It is disheartening to see her struggle after giving so much to society.
In South Africa, pensioners are currently receiving a grant that is inadequate to sustain a decent quality of life. As of 2023, the state old age pension provides R1,890 per month, which falls significantly short of covering basic necessities such as housing, utilities, food, and healthcare. According to the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice & Dignity group's Household Affordability Index, the cost of living has skyrocketed, with basic expenses surpassing R4000 monthly for an average household. The current pension does not reflect these rising costs, leaving our elderly in financial stress.
Pensioners, who have contributed so much to our society through their labor and taxes, deserve to live their golden years in dignity and comfort. An increase to R5000 would better align pension payments with the current cost of living, ensuring that our elders can live without fear of choosing between meals and medication, warmth and rent.
It is our urgent plea that the South African government revises the pension structure to provide a humane support system for those who have always supported us. We believe this can be achieved within the current budget framework by reallocating resources and prioritizing the welfare of our senior citizens over less urgent expenditures.
Show your support for pensioners like my mother by signing this petition to call for an increase in state pension payments. Together, we can help ensure that every elderly person in South Africa lives with the dignity they deserve.
