The Issue

Growing up, I was surrounded by animals. I learned early on to love and care for them, often taking in stray dogs and cats and ensuring they had a safe place to stay. However, in recent years, I've noticed a disturbing rise in animal abuse cases here in Singapore, and it fills me with anger and heartbreak. We now face the terrifying reality of worrying not only about whether these strays have a decent place to sleep but also about whether their water might be poisoned or if they might fall victim to brutal physical abuse or even murder. It is a cruelty beyond comprehension to harm a living being, especially an innocent animal that has no home and depends entirely on the goodwill of the community.

It's time for Singapore to take a stand against this heartless abuse. Our current legal system must be bolstered to protect these vulnerable creatures better. Currently, perpetrators of animal cruelty can escape with minimal punishment or even remain out of jail on bail, continuing their reign of terror upon defenseless animals. This is unacceptable. We must increase jail time for those convicted of animal abuse and remove the option of bail altogether. Let there be real consequences for those who inflict suffering on animals.

Countries that have strengthened their animal cruelty laws have seen significant improvements. For instance, in Australia, harsh penalties have been adopted, including substantial fines and imprisonment up to five years for serious offences, resulting in a decline in reported cases. Singapore needs to implement similar changes to send a clear message that animal abuse will not be tolerated. Stronger laws can deter potential abusers, protect animals, and help ensure offenders are held accountable for their inhumane actions.

Animal abusers are often repeat offenders, and failing to appropriately punish them only emboldens their behavior. With the number of abuse cases rising, now is the time to act. Join me in appealing to the relevant authorities to immediately review and amend our laws to ensure higher penalties and eliminate the possibility of bail for offenders in animal abuse cases.

Please sign this petition to advocate for more robust penalties for animal cruelty in Singapore, offering better protection to innocent animals and seeking justice for those harmed.
