Increase Owner Accountability for Dog Attacks and Related Damages

Increase Owner Accountability for Dog Attacks and Related Damages
The Issue
On a quiet Friday night in Kokomo, IN, my beloved 11-year-old beagle was brutally attacked by two pit bulls from next door. They jumped the fence into my yard and left my dog with injuries so severe that she had to be euthanized. The cost of attempting to repair the damage exceeded $10,000, but even then her survival was uncertain due to the risk of infection.
When I sought legal advice, I was told that in the eyes of law, my dog's life is equivalent to a piece of furniture being destroyed. This is unacceptable. Our pets are not mere property; they are cherished family members who bring joy and companionship into our lives.
In 2017 alone, there were an estimated 4.5 million dog bites in the United States (source: CDC). Yet many states still lack comprehensive laws holding pet owners accountable for their pets' actions.
This petition seeks to change this reality in Indiana by increasing owner responsibility for vicious dog attacks and making them liable for both physical and emotional damages resulting from such incidents.
We need your help to ensure that no other pet owner has to experience what we did without recourse or justice. It's time we give our pets more value than a couch under Indiana law! Please sign this petition today!
