Increase overnight police presence in downtown Cambridge

Increase overnight police presence in downtown Cambridge
The Issue
Downtown Cambridge and the Galt core are home to some of the most vibrant small businesses, historic streetscapes, and community events in the region. With thousands of visitors expected this holiday season for the tree lighting, Unsilent Night, and other celebrations, it’s more important than ever that our downtown remains welcoming, thriving, and well supported.
In recent months, many businesses across the downtown and nearby streets — including Water St., Main St., Ainslie St., Grand Ave. S., Wellington, and the surrounding commercial blocks — have experienced an increase in after-hours disturbances and property damage. While daytime activity remains lively and safe, these nighttime incidents add strain to small businesses who work hard to bring energy and life to the core.
Our goal with this petition is simple: to support a safer, stronger, and more resilient downtown for everyone — business owners, residents, and visitors alike.
We are calling on the City of Cambridge and Waterloo Regional Police Services to take proactive, visible steps to help protect the momentum downtown is building, beginning with:
1. A Temporary Increase in Overnight Patrols
A short-term increase in foot or vehicle patrol between 10 pm and 6 am in the downtown core and downtown-adjacent business districts.
This is a positive, preventative measure to ensure our neighbourhood remains cared for and supported.
2. Improved Lighting and Visibility
Enhanced lighting in laneways, rear entrances, and parking areas to create a safer environment after hours.
3. Expanded Municipal CCTV Coverage
Strategic, city-operated cameras in public areas to help deter property damage and assist in resolving incidents quickly.
4. A Collaborative Downtown Safety Plan
A coordinated approach developed with business owners, outlining practical steps, regular reporting, and shared solutions.
5. A Small Business Safety Support Program
Optional grants or cost-sharing for improved locks, exterior cameras, and other prevention tools — similar to programs in other Ontario cities.
These measures are not about raising alarm — they are about nurturing the success and wellbeing of our beautiful historic core. With more visitors arriving over the holidays and in the year ahead, this is the perfect moment to invest in the safety and prosperity of our downtown community.
A thriving downtown benefits all of Cambridge.
With the right support, we can continue building a welcoming and resilient environment that every resident and visitor can enjoy.
Please join us in asking for these positive, proactive steps to help sustain the growth and vibrancy of Downtown Cambridge.
