Increase MBBS stipend for Maharashtra interns to ₹30,000
The Issue
As an MBBS intern in Maharashtra, I am acutely aware of the financial struggles faced by medical interns across our state due to inadequate stipends. Despite the dedication and tireless efforts we put into our work, our compensation does not reflect the intensity and importance of our roles in the healthcare system. Currently, the stipend provided to interns is insufficient to cover basic living expenses, let alone the additional costs associated with medical education and training.
The current stipend for MBBS interns in Maharashtra does not keep pace with the rising cost of living, making it challenging for us to maintain a decent standard of living. Many of us have relocated to pursue our dreams of becoming doctors, and without adequate financial support, we find ourselves struggling to make ends meet. This situation forces some interns to seek financial help from family or work additional jobs, detracting from their focus on critical medical training and patient care.
Moreover, other states across India already offer higher stipends to their medical interns. For example, Kerala provides around ₹25,000 per month, which is substantially more than what we receive in Maharashtra. A fair stipend is not just an expectation, but a necessity to ensure that interns can perform their duties without financial stress impacting their mental and emotional health.
By increasing the stipend to ₹30,000, the state can acknowledge the indispensable role we play in maintaining the healthcare system, especially during times of crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic. This adjustment would not only provide relief but also motivate and acknowledge the contribution of all MBBS interns. Fair compensation is pivotal to sustaining a committed and skilled new generation of doctors, ready to serve Maharashtra's diverse population.
We urge the Government of Maharashtra and the relevant healthcare authorities to take immediate action in revising the stipend policy for MBBS interns. It is time to value our work and ensure that financial burdens no longer hinder our passion for medicine and patient care.
Please sign this petition to support an increase in the MBBS internship stipend to ₹30,000. Your support can help us achieve fair and just compensation for all medical interns in Maharashtra.
