The Issue
We are all hard and dedicated workers at Katy Independent School District (ISD), putting in countless hours and going above and beyond to nurture the students who will become tomorrow's leaders. Despite our consistent efforts and commitment, our compensation does not reflect the immense amount of hard work we invest in our roles every day. Currently, the district is only offering a meager 1% raise, which scarcely covers the rising cost of living and inflation.
The employees of Katy ISD, from teachers to administrative and support staff, deserve a raise that genuinely acknowledges their tireless dedication and the vital roles they play in shaping our community’s future. Education should be a priority, and the professionals who carry the weight of this responsibility should not have to struggle financially. A $3 to $5 raise for every employee is not only fair, but necessary, to ensure we can continue to provide the highest standard of education and service.
In 2021, studies showed that educators across the United States were already underpaid compared to other professionals with similar qualifications and experience. The recent inflation has only exacerbated this issue, making it even more challenging for employees to sustain themselves and their families. Katy ISD employees share similar burdens and face increasing financial stress that a mere 1% raise cannot alleviate.
Other districts have taken initiatives to adjust salaries that more accurately reflect both the demands of the occupation and living costs, setting an example that Katy ISD should follow. The value of education and educators cannot be downplayed, and their compensation should reflect that value.
