The Issue

Scalloped hammerhead sharks are one of nature’s most spectacular predators, but their populations have crashed and they are now classified as Critically Endangered.

These sharks are NEEDED to keep ocean ecosystems healthy. They help balance marine food webs as predators, supporting the health of oceans that millions of people depend on for food, livelihoods and climate regulation.

Their decline is largely due to human activity, including shark finning, accidental capture in fishing gear and loss of important coastal habitats where young sharks grow up.

There are some protections, but not enough. Illegal fishing persists, enforcement is spotty, and many scalloped hammerheads are still being taken from the ocean at rates exceeding their ability to reproduce. We the undersigned, call upon governments, fisheries organisations and international conservation bodies to:

Enforce more stringent against illegal shark finning and trade.

Increase monitoring of Scalloped hammerhead catches worldwide.

Reduce incidental catch of hammerheads in commercial fishing activities.

Protect critical breeding and nursery habitat.

Boost international collaboration to help this Critically Endangered species recover.

The scalloped hammerhead has been around for millions of years. We have to ensure that their disappearance is not caused by human activity. When we protect these sharks, we protect the health and balance of our oceans for generations to come.

Please help us take stronger action to save scalloped hammerhead sharks.
