The blooming population of feral cats and dogs in Hawaii County highlights an increasing need for an expanded spay/neuter (S/N) service. Unfortunately, the Hawaii County Animal Control and Protection Agency does not currently provide S/N services for feral creatures, leaving the responsibility to compassionate community members who often feel overwhelmed and helpless in the face of this growing issue. These animals are frequently left to reproduce, leading to cycles of starvation and abandonment due to overpopulation. We must urge the County to acknowledge this urgent issue and provide timely, increased funding to spay/neuter services. This investment is not only central to animal welfare, but it also aids in reducing animal-related stress and anxieties among community members. Timely intervention can curb the escalating problem of feral cat and dog overpopulation, promoting both a healthier animal population and a safer, less burdened community environment.
