The Issue

As a proud pet parent to a rescue shelter dog and creator of a registered Nonprofit organization USAK9, I truly understand the gravity of this issue. Animal shelters all over our nation are struggling with overpopulation, often leading to the heartbreaking decision of euthanizing healthy cats and dogs. The primary reason for this crisis is uncontrolled backyard breeding.

In 2020, an estimate of 6.5 million companion animals entered U.S. animal shelters (ASPCA) and unfortunately, about 1.5 million of these animals had to be euthanized. This is not due to illness or an incurable condition, but simply because there isn't enough room and resources for these innocent lives.

Our nation cannot continue to disregard this worsening situation. We must put our hands together and demand that our local, state, and national governments increase funding for animal shelters. Greater funding not only means providing more shelter for innocent animals, but also enhancing the overall conditions of these shelters and creating effective adoption programs.

Further, stricter regulations and laws should be levied upon backyard breeding. Unregulated breeding practices are causing a surge in the shelter population and leading to many health complications in these pets.

Let us remember, these are not just animals but companions who love us unconditionally and depend on us for safety and comfort. They deserve a life full of care, not one cut short due to our negligence.

Help me get the government's attention on this pressing matter by signing this petition. Your signature can usher life-saving changes for millions of dogs and cats nationally. Let's give these animals the chance they deserve.
