Born out of my personal concern for the inhumane treatment incurred by street animals, I am taking the initiative to petition for an increase in funding for animal shelters and boosting awareness of animal cruelty. Shockingly, a great number of these vulnerable animals have been mistreated relentlessly, many of them born on the unforgiving streets, others fleeing abusive homes or plainly deserted to fend for themselves. Limited resources and lack of space prevent animal shelters from providing refuge to these desperate creatures, leading to the tragic practice of euthanizing older animals to create more space. Estimates suggest that approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized annually (ASPCA). This heartbreaking statistic needs to change. By increasing funding to animal shelters, we can improve their capacity, resource availability, and ultimately, their ability to protect and shelter more animals thus reducing the euthanasia rates. Furthermore, spreading awareness against animal cruelty is vitally important to instigate a social change towards a world where animals are treated with empathy and kindness.
