Increase fuel subsidy for NHS community workers
The Issue
As an NHS community worker, I am witnessing firsthand the severe pressure that rising fuel costs are placing on healthcare providers like myself. Daily, I undertake essential travel across the communities we serve, but the current government-subsidised rate of 59p per litre barely covers my fuel expenses. When this rate was established, fuel prices were much lower. Today, fuel prices have soared, with diesel surpassing £2.00 per litre and unleaded fuel reaching £1.79 per litre at many stations. This steep rise has made the subsidy outdated and ineffective.
The cost of living in the UK has escalated significantly, putting additional pressure on healthcare workers who already receive modest salaries. With fuel prices skyrocketing due to international conflicts like the Iran war, filling my tank now costs approximately £30 more per week, as estimated by the RAC on 28th September 2026. This financial burden is unsustainable and inevitably impacts the capacity of NHS workers like me to perform our duties effectively.
NHS community workers are indispensable to the health and well-being of our citizens. We provide critical support and care, preventing hospital admissions and improving the quality of life for countless individuals. Yet, these rising fuel costs risk disabling our ability to perform our roles, potentially impacting patient care and making it difficult for us to continue serving communities efficiently.
To rectify this, I urge the government to reassess and increase the fuel subsidy rate to reflect the actual cost of fuel. This adjustment is not only fair but necessary in ensuring that commitment to community health is sustained without the financial strain that currently exists. Properly compensating healthcare workers for their travel expenses will uphold the quality and reliability of community health services.
Please support this petition to ensure we can continue offering vital healthcare services without being penalised by current fuel costs. Sign this petition to request that the government takes immediate action to increase fuel allowances for NHS community workers, securing the continued high standard of care our communities rely on. Your support can make a difference in the lives of those who care for you and your family.
