As a part-time Librarian and concerned parent in the San Diego Unified School District, I am deeply aware of the crucial role our elementary school librarians play in fostering a love for reading, enhancing research skills, and supporting teachers in creating a vibrant learning environment. Unfortunately, our district has had to make drastic cuts to librarian positions, reducing their presence in elementary schools to only one day a week. This means students only consistently get access to the library once a month and often for only 15 minutes at a time.

Elementary school librarians do more than just organize books; they are educational partners who collaborate with teachers to develop curriculum, introduce students to technology and digital literacy, and create an inclusive space where every child feels welcome. Studies have shown that schools with consistent and dedicated librarian support report improved reading scores and better overall student achievement. 

Currently, the minimal presence of librarians in our schools hinders their ability to engage with students, assess the evolving needs of their collections, or implement literacy programs. By increasing their days to a dedicated school site three days per week, librarians would have the opportunity to conduct regular reading programs, create a welcoming space and collaborate with teachers on a more impactful scale.

By supporting the increase of librarian positions to a dedicated school site for three days per week, we are not only advocating for the enrichment of our children’s education but also supporting motivated professionals to equip the next generation with essential skills.
