Increase ebike speed and power limits in Victoria

The issue

Ever since I was much younger, like many others, I've been fascinated by ebikes. I would sit on the couch researching different models and specifications for hours every day for more than two full years, searching for my dream bike. Eventually, I found multiple bikes that could help me spend more time outside, learn about different parts of bikes, and potentially make more friends. However, upon learning about Australia’s established laws regarding these types of bikes, my dream died.

In Victoria, current regulations limit ebikes to a maximum speed of 25 km/h and a continuous motor power output of 250 watts, whilst also requiring pedals. These restrictions not only impede the enjoyment and utility of ebikes but also restrict opportunities for innovation and the development of ebike technology that can improve urban mobility and reduce environmental impact.

Increasing the maximum speed limit to 35 km/h, changing the continuous motor power output to 750 watts, and ending the requirement of pedals aligns more appropriately with global standards, potentially attracting more enthusiasts who seek sustainable and efficient transportation options. Many countries have already adopted similar regulations that acknowledge the benefits of ebikes, including reduced traffic congestion and lower emissions.

By updating these laws, we can foster a healthier, more active community that embraces a modern mode of transport. This change will provide ebike enthusiasts, like myself, with the freedom to explore the world in a new way, without being unnecessarily limited by outdated laws.

Let’s advocate for a change in Victoria's ebike laws to allow for higher speed limits and increased power output that can help propel our society into a more sustainable future. Together, we can make this dream of efficient and fun transportation a reality for current and future generations.

Please sign this petition to support updating Victoria's (and potentially more states) ebike regulations and reignite the dreams of countless ebike lovers like myself. Your support can make a difference!
