In memory of a helpless, innocent dog I personally knew, left to die on a chain with no one to rescue him, we call upon the Alabama state government to address the grave issue of animal cruelty. This sweet, forgotten soul was one of a million similar cases in our region. His agonizing death in solitude, hungry and hurt, reflects the gross oversight of animal welfare, a sentiment echoed by compassionate animal lovers across Alabama.

Tragically, Alabama is one of the states with the weakest protections for animals, being ranked 48th out of 50 on the Animal Legal Defense Fund's annual report (source: Animal Legal Defense Fund, 2019). Our state laws still do not reflect how our community values our pets.

This petition requests the Alabama state government to increase the number of dog shelters equipped with comprehensive care services and to create more stringent regulations to protect animal welfare. We are advocating for tougher laws on chain tethering and neglect, stricter penalties for people who harm animals, and regular inspections to keep our animals safe.
