I’m a passionate skater living in Aberdeen, and like many in our vibrant community, I’ve come face-to-face with a serious challenge: the lack of diverse skateparks in our city. Whether you’re a scooter enthusiast, a skateboarder, a longboarder, a rollerblader, or a BMX rider, the single inadequate park we have doesn’t come close to fulfilling our needs. It’s not merely about practice; it’s about a place where we can gather, challenge ourselves, and truly express our passion in a safe and nurturing environment.

The current skatepark in Aberdeen is just too small, and it lacks the variety of features that different riders require for unique challenges. It’s frustrating to see a city as resourceful as Aberdeen not utilizing its funds to build dynamic recreational spaces that serve the community’s diverse sporting interests. Especially knowing the potential increase it could bring to local tourism and community engagement.

Consider places like Barcelona, which heavily invested in skateparks and now thrives from the influx of tourists coming just to experience their world-class facilities. Aberdeen, with its natural beauty and, untapped potential, could very well mirror this success. A diverse selection of skateparks would not just benefit local riders but also draw visitors from all over the US, benefiting local businesses and enhancing community pride.

We call upon the Aberdeen City Council to allocate funds towards creating more and better skateparks. This includes conducting a thorough analysis of locations that can support new developments, engaging with local skaters to understand their needs, and designing parks that cater to a wide array of riding disciplines.

Investing in skateparks means investing in Aberdeen’s youth and their aspirations. The community needs a space where everyone, irrespective of their chosen board or wheels, feels welcome and challenged. Let’s transform Aberdeen into a haven for skateboarders, BMX riders, rollerbladers, and scooter enthusiasts alike.
