Increase Digital Privacy

The Issue

At a time when the Internet is used 24/7 by people around the world, data privacy should be more of an understood topic. The United States has one of the largest amount of people who can access the Internet, with Pew Research stating it's around 95% of Americans have Internet access. People use the Internet for jobs, school, and small things like thermostats or Alexa. Most websites or browsers people use every day steal users' information and spy on them to sell to marketing teams.

If things stay the same as they are now, society will get more fragile because people are practically entrusting dozens of companies and websites to keep their information safe; however, if there is a data breach, millions of people worldwide can be the victims of identity thefts, doxing, harassment, extortion, and swatting.

Society must act now to stop data breaches before the data breaches happen. The longer the public waits on this, the less time society has to fix it. Even if someone doesn't know much about computers or can't help the problem, one of the biggest and easiest things people can do right now is switch to open-source browsers and software and be mindful of what they search for. Taking these small steps could end up preventing them from being part of crimes.
