Increase city lighting in Montgomery

Increase city lighting in Montgomery
The Issue
My name is Keldrick Johnson and I've been a resident of Montgomery, Alabama for my entire life. It's a beautiful city, full of promise and potential, but after the sun sets, certain areas become shrouded in darkness. It's in these dimly lit areas where the majority of our nighttime issues arise.
For instance, the unfortunate incident that occurred downtown in October was in a poorly lit area. This shouldn't have been the case, especially since it is on THE most populated street Downtown. Similarly, the dark spots on the interstate and the boulevard have been hot spots for accidents. This lack of adequate lighting does not only pose a danger to motorists but also to pedestrians and residents, particularly around school grounds and the entrances to neighborhoods.
Enhanced street lighting is not merely a cosmetic issue; it is a matter of public safety and community well-being. Studies have shown that improved lighting in cities can reduce crime rates significantly. According to the National Institute of Justice, well-lit spaces can deter criminal activities by increasing the probability of offenders being seen, apprehended, or deterred altogether. Increased lighting can also make nightlife more lively and vibrant, and that coupled with the increased safety of brightness will create more revenue and fun for the city of Montgomery.
Moreover, increased lighting can reduce the number of vehicular accidents. The US Department of Transportation has indicated that improved roadway lighting can reduce nighttime accidents by as much as 50%. It’s not just about feeling safe; it's about being safe.
Our beloved Montgomery deserves effective lighting solutions. Firstly, the city council should conduct a comprehensive audit to identify these critical dark areas across the city. Secondly, they should partner with experienced urban lighting consultants to install energy-efficient and bright LED lights. These lights not only provide better illumination but are also cost-effective in the long term. If power use is the issue, then we could implement glow-in-the-dark paint on the streets so that the lanes are always visible regardless of time.
Let us come together to urge our local government to prioritize this vital issue. By signing this petition, you are advocating for a safer Montgomery, where families can enjoy an evening walk without fear, where drivers can navigate without anxiety, and where children can play safely near their homes after dusk.
Sign this petition today and help illuminate Montgomery for a brighter, safer future.
