When I first stepped into the bathroom at my school in Alexandria, Virginia, I was shocked by how low the stalls were. It made me immediately uncomfortable, and I wanted to leave the restroom and wait until I could get home. As the week went on, I heard many of the girls around me voicing the same complaint about the stall heights, feeling exposed and uneasy using facilities that didn't offer proper privacy. This experience is not just an inconvenience but an invasion of our privacy at a time when we are most vulnerable.

It’s common knowledge that during adolescence, kids are growing at different rates – some faster than others, leading to significant differences in height among peers. Bathroom stalls in our school should reflect this reality and provide comfort and adequate privacy for all students, regardless of their height. Upon observing that the boys' restroom stalls upstairs were significantly taller, I couldn't help but wonder if the shorter stalls in the girls' restroom were a result of limited budget allocations or even a reflection of gender biases, suggesting girls are generally shorter, which should not justify compromising our privacy.

While I recognize the safety concerns related to drug use or vaping in bathrooms that might warrant less enclosed spaces, these concerns should not overshadow the basic right to privacy that every student deserves. We can implement other monitoring solutions that do not infringe on personal comfort and respect.

Many schools, including my previous elementary school, have high bathroom stalls that ensure the privacy and dignity of each individual using them. It is indeed frustrating and disheartening that my current school does not prioritize this issue, making an everyday necessity feel intimidating and awkward.
