Increase annual leave by 10 days for inflexible jobs
The Issue
I have worked in hospitality my whole working life. The world of work has changed and the Government & mainstream media seem to presume that all of us work at desks. Office jobs often have flexible hours, days, remote work options, and the ability to manage family commitments without compromising career progress. This flexibility provides a much better work/life balance. Additionally, with the rising state pension age, it's far more feasible for individuals whose jobs involve sitting at a laptop to continue working into older age.
It is time for those in less flexible jobs to also enjoy a reasonable work/life balance. Jobs in sectors such as hospitality, retail, healthcare, and manual labor are often physically demanding, restrictive in terms of schedule, and notorious for lacking job flexibility. These jobs usually don't offer the luxury of working from home or adjusting work hours around personal commitments, creating an imbalance in work and personal life.
Current annual leave allocations for these challenging roles are simply insufficient for the mental and physical health of workers. According to studies, having more annual leave can significantly boost overall employee satisfaction and productivity, leading to better service delivery and fewer health complications caused by job stress. For these reasons, it is imperative that we advocate for a policy change that provides additional annual leave days for employees in such challenging and rigid work environments.
Allowing more annual holidays for workers in inflexible positions would not only improve employee well-being and productivity but also contribute to a more equitable society. It’s a small step towards ensuring every worker, irrespective of their job’s flexibility, has the opportunity to rest, recharge, and maintain a healthy balance between work and life everyday.
