Increase Alabama Medicaid's Behavioral Health Reimbursement Rates

Increase Alabama Medicaid's Behavioral Health Reimbursement Rates

The Issue

As a concerned citizen and an advocate for mental health, I am deeply troubled by the current state of mental health care access in Alabama. Our state ranks 50th in the nation for access to mental healthcare according to Mental Health America. This is a dire situation that calls for immediate action.

The heart of this issue lies in the low reimbursement rates from Alabama Medicaid for behavioral health services. Alabama has the second lowest reimbursement rate for these services out of the entire U.S. These rates are so low that they create significant disparities and limit access to much-needed care. In fact, studies have shown that closing the pay gap between private insurance and Medicaid would reduce more than two-thirds of these disparities (Alexander & Schell, 2020). Help us prioritize mental health and ensure that all Alabamians can access quality care when they need it most.

We must urge our local representatives to increase behavioral health reimbursement rates from Alabama Medicaid. By doing so, we can expand access to essential mental health services and begin addressing these unacceptable disparities.
