Increase accessible parks for children with disabilities
The issue
As a carer, it truly breaks my heart to witness children with disabilities, like the wonderful young girl I look after, feeling left out of the simple joys of playing at public parks. She often watches other kids run, climb, and laugh, unable to join because the playgrounds are not designed for wheelchairs or children with mobility challenges. This is not just a single story—it's a widespread issue that affects countless families across Australia.
Our community parks and playgrounds should be spaces where every child can participate and enjoy the benefits of play, regardless of their physical abilities. Play is crucial for all children as it supports their physical, social, and emotional development. When children are excluded, they miss out on a vital aspect of growing up that others might take for granted.
According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, approximately 320,000 children in Australia live with a disability, many of whom require a wheelchair or other mobility aids. Despite these numbers, accessible playgrounds are exceedingly rare. This lack of facilities significantly impacts these children’s ability to participate in community activities.
We are urging local councils and park authorities to include more wheelchair-accessible parks and inclusive playground equipment across our communities. Simple changes, such as installing ramps, sensory equipment, and appropriate swings, could make an incredible difference. Additionally, creating smooth pathways and ensuring adequate space for wheelchairs will help ensure that no child is left on the sidelines.
Your signature on this petition can be a catalyst for change. By showing your support, you help raise awareness and pressure decision-makers to prioritize the inclusion of all children, regardless of their abilities. Let's work together to make our parks a welcoming playground for every child.
Please sign this petition to advocate for inclusive play spaces, so all kids can enjoy the magic of childhood and participate fully in community life.
