The Issue

Addiction is a crisis that touches so many lives, including those in my own community here in Dayton, Ohio. I have witnessed firsthand the struggles that individuals and their families face when attempting to access the treatment and support they desperately need. It's a heart-wrenching reality that far too many are confronted with — the inability to find or afford appropriate addiction treatment.

In Montgomery County, home to Dayton, the opioid epidemic continues to wreak havoc, with overdose rates among the highest in the state. According to the Public Children Services Association of Ohio, in recent years, there has been a significant uptick in child welfare cases stemming from parental substance abuse. This paints a grim picture of how deeply this crisis affects families, often leaving children vulnerable and communities struggling.

Despite these pressing needs, local treatment resources remain limited and are often costly, placing them out of reach for many. The Dayton region needs a comprehensive approach to addiction treatment that includes expanding affordable services, increasing funding for community health services, and ensuring that these life-saving treatments are accessible to all who need them.

We need to call upon local government representatives at the city and county levels, including the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners and Dayton City Council, to prioritize this public health crisis. It's imperative that they allocate funds to mental health and addiction services and work collaboratively with healthcare providers to increase the availability and affordability of treatment options.

Moreover, policies should be put in place to support prevention and educational programs that can help reduce addiction rates and support recovery efforts. By investing in these initiatives, we can provide hope and a pathway to healing for our residents.

Please join me in urging our leaders to take immediate action to expand access to affordable addiction treatment services in Dayton. Sign this petition to make your voice heard and help bring much-needed change to our community.
