Incorporate protected bike lanes throughout Las Vegas
The Issue
Cycling has always been a passion of mine, and it brings me immense joy to ride through our beautiful Las Vegas neighborhoods. However, the absence of protected bike lanes makes this an incredibly daunting and dangerous experience. Every time I mount my bicycle, I am acutely aware of the risks involved. Sharing the road with vehicles, with nothing but a painted line to separate us, is a gamble that undermines not just my joy in cycling but also that of many others who could benefit from this sustainable, healthy mode of transportation.
Currently, bicyclists in Las Vegas and Clark County face disproportionately high risks of both fatal and severe injuries compared to motorists. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Nevada has seen an increase in bicyclist fatalities, making it a state of significant concern for cyclist safety. Integrating protected bike lanes into Las Vegas and Clark County's main roads could drastically reduce these risks by providing a clear, secure path for cyclists, shielded from the high-speed chaos of vehicular traffic.
Protected bike lanes are more than just an infrastructure update. They are an investment in public health, safety, and the quality of life of our city's residents. Studies from cities that have implemented protected bike lanes, such as New York and Portland, show a marked decrease in accidents and a significant increase in people willing to commute by bike. Implementing protected bike lanes is a step Las Vegas needs to take to position itself as a modern, forward-thinking city dedicated to community well-being. With the success of one of the newest protected bike lanes on Starr Avenue, from Las Vegas Blvd to Bermuda Rd, the city has shown it can implement these lanes with ease and at scale.
Implementing this change requires collaboration between city planners, traffic engineers, and local government agencies to ensure the design and execution of these lanes meet safety standards and community needs. Additionally, integrating public feedback into the planning process will enable a tailored solution that addresses specific local issues and concerns.
By signing this petition, you are joining a call for change—a call to make our roads safer for everyone. You are supporting a critical enhancement to our city’s transport infrastructure that encourages cleaner transport, reduces traffic congestion, and protects lives. Let’s work together to make Las Vegas safer and more sustainable. Sign and share this petition to demand action from our local leaders!
