Language on an historical marker at the corner of Spring and Locust Streets in Herndon, VA describes the site's former Herndon Fortnightly Library as providing years of service to local residents without mentioning that the library did not loan books to non-white readers for decades during Virginia's era of segregation.

The building's current occupants, Herndon Friends Meeting (Quakers), seek to change the current sign, or add a new sign, to include words that more fully describe the library's impact on all residents and taxpayers, including people excluded from borrowing books.

Names placed on this petition will be shared with Herndon town officials to demonstrate that area residents support inclusive wording on historical markers.  We do this as a way to witness the suffering of Virginia's residents during the Jim Crow era and to promote long-term racial healing and reconciliation.
