Inclusion of Massage Therapy in Elite HS School Sports Budgets

Inclusion of Massage Therapy in Elite HS School Sports Budgets
The Issue
I am a massage therapist who has worked extensively with young, elite athletes. It is concerning and alarming how the system neglects to prioritize injury prevention measures in favor of reactive care. Currently, the athletic programs at the majority of elite schools only have a physical therapist (PT) on hand, who is typically only consulted after a sports related injury has occurred. While treatment post-injury is important, our focus also needs to incorporate preventative measures.
Many of my clients arrive extremely tense, often precariously close to injury due to inadequate recovery and preventive services on campus. Massage therapy can assist in preventing injuries by easing muscle tension, enhancing recovery, and improving overall athletic performance.
According to the American Massage Therapy Association, massage therapy has been found to improve performance, reduce pain, prevent injury, encourage focus and shorten recovery time. It basically involves applying touch to the soft tissues of the body, thereby improving muscle flexibility, reducing fatigue and aiding in physical rejuvenation.
It is therefore crucial that we urge elite programs and colleges to adjust their budgets to include massage therapy for injury prevention, rejuvenation and correct recovery between high level preparations and games. Not only will this provide a more comprehensive approach to our athletes' physical health, but it also represents a shift towards prioritizing their well-being in the long term. Please sign this petition to help initiate this critical change.
