The Prayer of the Petition
We, the undersigned citizens and residents of Barbados, alongside the African Heritage Foundation (Charity No. 1112), respectfully request the Cabinet of Barbados to officially add April 21st to the national Season of Emancipation calendar starting in the year 2027.
Furthermore, we petition that this day be formally designated to honor, celebrate, and recognize the historical, spiritual, and cultural contributions of the Rastafari movement to Barbados and the wider African diaspora.
Grounds for the Petition
• Historical Significance: April 21st marks the historic 1966 visit of His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie I to the Caribbean, a monumental event that galvanized the regional Rastafari community and accelerated the consciousness of African identity.
The visit of Emperor Haile Selassie I to Barbados on April 21, 1966, was deeply significant to the island’s upcoming independence on November 30 of that same year because it provided a powerful injection of Pan-African validation, psychological liberation, and diplomatic legitimacy right as the nation prepared to break free from centuries of British colonial rule.
While the British colonial narrative was heavily emphasized during Queen Elizabeth II’s tour of the island just two months prior in February 1966, Emperor Selassie’s visit offered a critical counterweight that reshaped how Barbadians viewed their imminent sovereignty.
• Cultural Equity: The Rastafari movement has been a cornerstone of Barbadian cultural expression, promoting sustainable living, food security, herbal medicine, artistic excellence, and African philosophies.
• Completing the Narrative: Integrating this date into the Season of Emancipation explicitly honors a group that has long championed the psychological, spiritual, and physical liberation of African-descended people.
• Democratic Support: This petition is presented in tandem with a national survey demonstrating widespread public backing for the formal state recognition of Rastafari heritage.
