Include the TDoR in the Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence
The Issue
For this year’s Trans Day of Remembrance, I, Ashley Bouman, would like to make a CALL TO ACTION for the nation of Canada, particularly the federal government and the Women and Gender Equality Canada (formerly Status of Women Canada), to change the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, that begins on November 25th (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to include the Trans Day of Remembrance, changing it from 16 Days to become the 21 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
It is a travesty that the Trans Day of Remembrance is not included in the Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence when “gender-based violence” is literally in the name.
This needs to be changed immediately. The trans and gender-diverse community are the most likely to experience physical violence (often leading to death) and this violence and hatred needs to end now.
The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an internationally recognised observance of various significant days that recognised the issue of gender-based violence, and I feel that it is important for the nation of Canada (and hopefully other nations to follow) to recognise the historical significance of November 20th as well as a show support to the trans, nonbinary, and gender-diverse community to uphold the very nature of this human rights issue.
The Trans Day of Remembrance is important because it honours the lives of those who are often forgotten or overlooked, and brings public awareness of the continued and growing hate crimes and violence against the trans and gender-diverse community.
It also serves as a reminder to non-transgender/gender-diverse people that it is their children, parents, friends, and lovers that are experiencing hate crimes and gender-based violence at an alarming rate.
As a community we need to be better. It is atrocious that we let these injustices happen to our trans and gender-diverse friends and loved-ones. We need to be better allies, provide better support and create an atmosphere of inclusion and safety.
Everyone deserves to live their best life and thrive. Everyone deserves to live.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
