Include Public Service Employees with Private Student Loans in Public Ser Loan Forgiveness

Include Public Service Employees with Private Student Loans in Public Ser Loan Forgiveness
Why this petition matters

The goal of Public Student Loan Forgiveness, (PSLF) is to forgive student loans for substantial career commitment to public service after 10 years of student loans payments.
Please contemplate the following scenario. A borrower experienced a decade of discouragement with the student loan servicer. Frustrated by years of paperwork, poor communication and a higher interest rate, the borrow follows an advertisement which refinanced their student loan to a lower interest rate. Next, COVID hits. PSLF is revised (for being fraught with problems) but because the government employee now has a private student loan, they are shutout of loan forgiveness.
- Please sign the petition to let the media and presidential administration know this is a problem. As we gain support this concern can be submitted to outlets like @Newsweek, @Lawrence & @WhiteHouse.
PSLF, Previously qualified borrowers, including government employees that had federally disbursed loans, later refinanced to private loans are unnecessarily disqualified for forgiveness at time. Lets change this. The Biden administration has made changes and more may come. Please sign the petition to urge the "powers that be" to include these workers in PSLF.
- I ask for your help in making the change,
Public servants are being shutout because private student loans are not able to be enrolled or recognized in PSLF. Refinancing with lenders to conform the loan to PSLF, requirements is not currently possible. This includes disbursed, federal student loans that were refinanced a decade later to become a private student loan. Meaning, a borrower with a Perkins or other federal student loans is not eligible for PSLF, if they already refinanced to private loans. Even if the refinancing was initiated by miscommunication from the servicer of the loan. Loan servicers like AES, discouraged borrowers with information that their 5 or 10 years of payments would not apply to PSLF. Further, the tax structure does not provide an added tax credit (annual or lump sum) to provide student loan forgiveness as an alternative to PSLF.
- Please support this effort to make sure the government and media know PSLF is not meeting it true potential.

"If you have Federal Family Education (FFEL) Program loans, Perkins, or other federal student loans, you'll need to consolidate your loans into a Direct Consolidation Loan to qualify for PSLF, both in general and under the waiver..."

"Employment with the following types of organizations qualifies for PSLF: Government organizations at any level (federal, state, local, or tribal) Not-for-profit organizations that are tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code"
For those that say it can't happen. We want your signature most of all to create awareness for policy change. This is most likely to happen if those that want to help, sign. Especially, in the case of public servants that refinanced student loans away from federal loan programs. It is conceivable, refinancing took place before PSLF was available. For example the loan borrow's, initial job could of been in the private sector. This loan was paid by the private lender to the government loan servicer and the borrower continues to pay the private loan for years. Ideally, making the balance much smaller. This can be recognize in the accounting and payoff can take place once the borrower would be eligible. The debate on how it is paid can be sorted out once we get this issue in front of the president.
The Biden administration has been clearing paths to loan forgiveness by examining the situation, identifying the problem and making policy to eliminate that specific issue. Support, public service workers that did the work and make them eligible for PSLF. In these amazing times we have seen the government is capable of much.
I thank you,
