The Issue

Menstruation can cause symptoms such as cramping, fatigue, pain, aches, and more. According to a study by the NIH, menstrual pain was reported by 84.1% of women. At least one in four women had distressing menstrual pain characterized by a need for medication or not participating in activities, such as school. This pain can often subside throughout the day, causing students to only be absent for a number of classes. Menstrual-related symptoms are not currently included on the GHS absence form, which leaves parents and students to either lie or choose an alternate option. As this is such a normal issue affecting those with uteruses, it should be added to the form. It is important that GHS does so, to not erase the pain that is felt by so many of its students.
