Include Menopause as a Protected Characteristic Under the Equality Act 2010

The Issue

I was diagnosed with early menopause at the age of 35. This personal experience has revealed to me how debilitating this condition can be, affecting not only physical health but also emotional well-being and professional life. Despite its widespread impact, menopause is not currently recognized under the Equality Act 2010 as a protected characteristic, leaving many without legal protection against discrimination.

Menopause affects approximately one in three women over the age of 50 in the UK (source: NHS). Yet, despite its prevalence and potential severity, it remains largely overlooked in legislation. This lack of recognition can lead to unfair treatment and discrimination in various aspects of life including employment.

By including menopause as a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010, we would be taking an important step towards acknowledging its significant impact on individuals' lives and ensuring that those affected are treated fairly.
