Include Geoinformatics as a Dedicated Subject in UGC/CSIR NET Exams
Include Geoinformatics as a Dedicated Subject in UGC/CSIR NET Exams
The Issue
The Issue:
The Ministry of Education recognises Geoinformatics as a standalone discipline with a dedicated "Geomatics Engineering (GE)" paper in GATE. However, there is no equivalent in the NET exam for those aiming for JRF or Assistant Professorships.
Currently, Geoinformatics graduates must take NET in Environmental Sciences (Paper 89) or Geography (Paper 80).
- 90% Mismatch: Candidates waste months studying human geography or environmental biology—subjects completely detached from their actual core expertise in spatial computing, coding, and satellite data analytics.
Why It Matters Now:
India is driving massive geospatial mandates like PM Gati Shakti, Digital Twin initiatives, Smart Cities, and ISRO’s data commercialization. To support these national goals, higher education institutions urgently need a pipeline of specialized faculty and researchers. Lacking a dedicated NET framework creates a massive academic bottleneck.
Our Demand:
We urge the UGC, CSIR, and Ministry of Education to introduce a dedicated Geoinformatics / Geomatics paper in the NET exam, aligning it with the standard already established by GATE.
