Hi!
I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who has taken the time to read, donate and share the petition thus far. It’s exciting to see how many signatures we have gotten in just a few days! I’m also deeply moved by the stories that you have shared and the conversation that’s happening with other people who have signed.
A little about me, I’m a student at York University studying Health and I work in healthcare. I also have a son who mirrors almost all of my personality and some say my looks. I started this petition for him so he can experience a world that is better than the one I came up in and for myself, so I get to see him live in it.
At the height of the Black Lives Matter movement, many who hold seats in government told us to keep them accountable. This is what that looks like. By mobilizing, amplifying and bringing facts to the desks of politicians on the cusp of an election, we hold untapped power that can create change.
Change that can impact not only our livelihoods but the ones of our offspring strengthening the legacies we leave behind.
You can’t talk about health equality and not see colour.
You can’t talk about health equity and not see colour.
You can’t talk about healthcare and not see the society it serves in colour.
I ask you to keep sharing and keep amplifying your voice, bringing eyes to this injustice. I know for some that is a lot to ask for, especially in a society that has conditioned you to think that what you have as it is right now is enough. It's not.
Imagine if instead of the Black community fighting chronic illnesses we were able to compete in a capitalist market and build generational wealth? In the words of Issa Rae, I’m rooting for every Black.
To the allies, your solidarity continues to be valued, appreciated and does not go unnoticed. I know for some, saying something has put you at odds with people in your communities. This issue affects all of BIPOC and I petition for them as well in the name of equality.
For next steps I plan to:
- Connect with media outlets
- Share the petition
- Find out how you can report doctors who refuse/discourage testing
- How you can get vitamin D as a prescription (an immediate help for those who can’t afford the supplements)
In the comments someone mentioned they were able to get supplements covered through their insurance. If you have health insurance please check.
This is our petition so I welcome any suggestions or feedback.
Have a great week,
Toya
