We, the undersigned, respectfully call on the Toronto Catholic District School Board to include Blessed Vasyl Velychkovsky, Ukrainian Catholic bishop and martyr, in the name of the new Catholic secondary school being established at the former Scarlett Heights site.

✝️ A Powerful Symbol of Catholic Unity
Plans to include both a Roman Catholic and an Eastern Catholic chapel within the new school reflect a beautiful and inclusive vision—one that embraces the universality of the Catholic Church. Including Blessed Vasyl in the school’s name would give that vision lasting expression and meaning.

As Pope St. John Paul II often said, the Church must breathe with both lungs—Eastern and Western. Naming this new school, in part, after Blessed Vasyl would make that vision real for thousands of students and families across Toronto.

🙏 Who Was Blessed Vasyl?
Blessed Vasyl Velychkovsky was a Redemptorist priest who suffered imprisonment, torture, and exile for remaining faithful to the Catholic Church during Soviet persecution. He was secretly ordained a bishop by Metropolitan Josyf Slipyj and went on to serve as a spiritual father in Ukraine’s underground Church before finishing his earthly ministry in Canada. His incorrupt relics rest in Winnipeg.

His life stands as a powerful witness to faith under fire, courage in adversity, and unwavering dedication to truth—values we aspire to instill in every student.

📚 Why This Matters for Our Schools
This school will likely serve graduates from three Eastern Rite elementary schools:

Josyf Cardinal Slipyj
St. Demetrius
St. Josaphat
By naming the school in part after Blessed Vasyl, we send a clear message to those students and families: you belong. Your heritage is honoured, and your faith tradition is valued in the life of our Catholic community.

🕊 Precedent Exists
Dual-name schools already exist within the TCDSB—Michael Power / St. Joseph and Bishop Marrocco / Thomas Merton—proving that our board is capable of reflecting more than one voice in the identity of a school.

We ask that the TCDSB consider naming the new school:

Планування окремих каплиць для Римсько-Католицького та Східно-Католицького обрядів — це сильний і гармонійний крок у напрямку до визнання повноти Католицької ідентичності. Включення імені Блаженного Василя у назву школи стане постійним знаком цієї єдності.

Святий Папа Іван Павло ІІ часто повторював, що Церква має «дихати двома легенями» — Східною і Західною. Назва школи, що поєднує ці обидві традиції, зробить цю ідею живою для майбутніх поколінь учнів.

🙏 Хто такий Блаженний Василь?
Блаженний Василь Величковський — редемпторист, єпископ, мученик Української Католицької Церкви. Його переслідували й катували за вірність Христові в радянські часи. У 1972 році він служив і в Торонто, а згодом завершив своє земне життя в Канаді. Його нетлінні мощі сьогодні спочивають у Винніпезі, в Національному Мученицькому Санктуарії.

Його життя — це приклад віри, мужності, любові до свого народу та жертовності заради Церкви. Таким він був, і таким він може стати дороговказом для кожного учня.

📚 Це має значення для нашої шкільної спільноти
Нова школа, швидше за все, буде обслуговувати випускників трьох Східно-Католицьких шкіл TCDSB:

Йосиф Кардинал Сліпий
Св. Димитрія
Св. Йосафата
Включення українського католицького святого до назви школи буде актом визнання, що наші традиції, культура й духовна спадщина мають своє гідне місце в ширшій католицькій родині Торонто.

🕊 Існує Прецедент
У TCDSB вже є школи з подвійними назвами, як-от Michael Power / St. Joseph і Bishop Marrocco / Thomas Merton. Це доказ того, що ми вже визнаємо багатогранність нашої спільної католицької ідентичності.
