As someone loves to frequent the U.S. National Whitewater Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, I always look forward to spending time there. However, there's one aspect of the experience that leaves me disheartened, particularly when I bring friends along who are non-binary.  The liability waiver presented to all participants is limited in its options, forcing individuals to choose a gender that might not align with their identity, which is not only non-affirming but also adds an unnecessary layer of stress.

According to a study by The Williams Institute, approximately 1.2 million adults in America identify as non-binary, representing a significant and important segment of our population that deserves recognition and respect.  The inclusion of a non-binary option on forms is not only a step towards inclusivity but is also a crucial acknowledgment of diverse gender identities.

The U.S. National Whitewater Center is a place where adventure and community come together.  It should pioneer change by embodying an environment that is welcoming and affirming for all.  We call on the management team of the Whitewater Center to update their liability waivers to include a non-binary gender option. This change promotes inclusivity, represents our community’s diversity, and respects the identities of all participants.

Implementing such a change is straightforward and can serve as an example for other recreational facilities around the country.  The process involves updating the paper waiver forms to include a third gender option of Non-binary, thereby ensuring that everyone feels recognized and respected.

We urge decision-makers at the Whitewater Center to take immediate action to rectify this oversight.
