Hey Everyone,
After less than a month into the campaign to require free water stations at dancehalls, nightclubs, and large gatherings, we:
- Collected more than 650 signatures! (but always need more ;D)
- Interviewed with the Guardian about the importance of accessible free water for guests' health and safety.
- Spoke with supervisors for municipality-funded mobile water station programs in Boston, Charleston, SC, and Durham, NC, and were briefed on how those programs are funded, operated, and sustained.
- Reached out to over 150 community/creative collectives, mutual aid groups, local ambulance corps, and organizations that specialize in neighborhood safety and health advocacy.
- Drafted policy points into a workable local law, and scheduled meetings with lobbyists/consultants for legal review.
While there is still much work to be done, all of the right steps are being taken, all the right things are happening behind-the-scenes, and we're extremely encouraged by the enthusiasm expressed by partygoers, hospitality and event workers, community safety advocates, and healthcare professionals.
This isn't just about nightlife safety; it's about the principle that everyone deserves easy access to drinking water. At a time when summer temperatures are only getting hotter, folx are managing chronic health conditions, and healthcare services are facing cuts at every level, free accessible drinking water isn't a privilege; it's a necessity and a strategy.
