The Issue

We, the undersigned, are calling on the Orion Township Board, the Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC), and the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to take immediate action to permanently close West Morgan Hill Rd at its intersection with M-24. On March 19, 2025, my sister, Jennifer Billington, lost her life in a fatal crash at this intersection when a van disobeyed traffic signs and pulled out in front of her motorcycle. The magnitude of loosing her is impossible to express. She was so young, and still had so much life left to live and now, all because someone was in a hurry and CHOSE to disregard the clearly posted, visible signs, the opportunity to live her life to the fullest was taken from her. This WAS NOT an isolated incident—but it WAS an avoidable incident. There have been numerous crashes and near-misses here due to reckless driving and poor traffic compliance.  This intersection, at MORGAN HILL RD and M24 has become a dangerous and misused cut-through, with drivers using Morgan Hill to bypass traffic between Silverbell Rd and M-24—often at high speeds and in violation of posted traffic laws. Despite “Right Turn Only” and “Do Not Enter” signs near the Michigan left lanes, many drivers continue to ignore them, creating serious safety hazards.  This is a residential area, and the lives and safety of those who live and travel here should not be compromised for the sake of convenience. We are urging Orion Township, RCOC, and MDOT to take this immediate action, permanently closing West Morgan Hill Rd at M-24 to eliminate this hazardous traffic pattern before even one more life  is lost or tragically changed forever! One life lost is too many, and no other families should have to suffer a loss like ours when it is something that is so preventable and avoidable!  Please sign and share this petition to help make our roads safer for everyone.
