Solar Power in Marathwada and Vidarbha: A Sustainable Alternative to Forest Cutting at Bhimashankar
Instead of cutting valuable forest in the Bhimashankar region for a power project, Maharashtra should seriously consider developing large-scale solar power plants in Marathwada and Vidarbha. These regions have significant potential for solar energy generation, subject to suitable land availability, grid connectivity and project feasibility.
Developing solar power in these regions would not only generate clean electricity but also create local employment, attract investment, improve power infrastructure and support regional economic development. Solar plants on suitable non-forest land could reduce pressure on the ecologically sensitive Western Ghats while bringing economic benefits to regions that need sustainable development.
Cutting forests during the current drought and water-stress conditions is particularly concerning. Forests play a vital role in protecting soil, supporting groundwater recharge, regulating local water cycles and maintaining biodiversity. Once a mature natural forest is destroyed, its ecological functions cannot be restored immediately by planting new trees.
Maharashtra should therefore prioritise solar development in Marathwada and Vidarbha, supported by appropriate energy storage where required, rather than sacrifice precious forest ecosystems without thoroughly evaluating alternatives. This approach can deliver electricity, promote regional development and protect our natural heritage for future generations.
The goal should be to generate power without destroying forests when viable alternatives exist.
