Improving UNLV Security Through Verifying Students and Faculty

Improving UNLV Security Through Verifying Students and Faculty
The Issue
My name is Lisandro Zamora, I am a freshmen at UNLV. I was in the Frank and Estella Beam Hall (BEH) on December 6th during the UNLV shooting. From my short time here I’ve seen many homeless individuals entering restrooms and stealing paper towels and soap, leaving a mess for the custodial staff since we are an open campus. When I mention open campus, it means that anyone is free to enter and exit the campus. While this has the benefit of freely moving in and out of campus, it also allows anyone to enter the campus and access the buildings. A possible solution would be keeping UNLV an open campus but require some form of verification to enter the buildings. This system is already in place for many buildings such as the gymnasium and the Honors College which both require students to use their Rebel ID Card to access the building. That way instead of having designated checkpoints and entrances throughout UNLV, the building entrances will require anyone who wants to enter to provide some form of verification to access. My goal isn’t to implement my solution but to show that this is an issue that requires a change throughout the campus. I have read many of the comments, all of which that bring equally valid solutions. I thank each and everyone of one you for taking the time to read, comment, and support this petition to ensure everyone can feel safe.
