By creating this petition, the goal we’re aiming to achieve is a change within police protocol when it comes to the etiquette before, during and after Police stop and searches.

We are a group of young people from the organisation ‘NCS’, National Citizens Service, where we’re working towards shifting social injustices within our communities and injustices which effect ourselves and those around us.

Our aim is for the Police to provide a clearer, continual explanation when stopping and searching members of the public, with improved professionalism whereby the public are treated with dignity and respect.

Us as young people have seen firsthand unecessary stop and searches, but also abuse of authority used out of proportion.

This effects the well-being of victims in negative ways as these repeated actions can be detrimental on the mental health of people.

As a close-knit community of young people, we can see the detrimental impact it has on the day to day basis of a young person navigating life.

Someone who is stopped and searched is usually asked for their ethnicity. National rates are influenced by the higher number of incidents involving certain ethnic groups. This is reflected in the statistic that we’ve found from an independent organisation called,

Liberty Human Rights statistics show that you’re 10x more likely to be subjected to stop and search if you’re a member of the black community. This statistic is representative, but not limited to, the view of unjust violation of Human Right for POC in particular.

This goes to show that racism is still present within today’s society and that it plays a huge impact on the mental health of people of colour due to the the nature of particular stop and searches, as they can become invasive which leads to the victim being left with no dignity.

By signing this petition, we are putting our feet forward and taking control of an issue which is seemingly swept under the rug by the force it pertains to. Applying pressure will catalyse the reaction for social reformation, for the benefit of the people, but also the Police department and our interactions with each other.
