Improve working conditions for single parents
The Issue
As a single parent working part-time, the current rules around working conditions have caused me untold stress and anxiety. I'm reaching out to others who understand the struggles single parents face, especially when it comes to balancing work and family responsibilities without the necessary support.
One of the most pressing issues is the upfront childcare costs. For single parents, paying these fees is often difficult, and having them reimbursed later doesn't lessen the immediate financial burden. By providing childcare costs upfront, we can alleviate unnecessary stress and create a more supportive environment for families.
Currently, single parents are required to work a minimum of 30 hours per week to qualify for certain benefits, which can be a significant strain. Lowering this hourly requirement would offer much-needed flexibility for parents who may have to take time off if a child is unwell, without the risk of losing crucial benefits like universal credit.
Many employers do not offer sick pay, which puts additional stress on single parents when a child falls ill. They have to choose between caring for their child or losing income and potentially facing sanctions.
We urge policymakers to reform these outdated requirements and provide a supportive framework that acknowledges the challenges single parents face. By taking these steps, we can help create a fairer, more compassionate society for single parents and their children.
