The issue

As an Australian worker, I've noticed a growing issue that is concerning many of us in the workforce. International students, while a valuable part of our community, are being pushed beyond their legal work limits in the taxi and rideshare industries. These students, who are permitted to work up to 24 hours per week during study periods, often face unparalleled pressure to exceed this limit due to limited monitoring and enforcement from relevant authorities. This not only affects their own well-being and academic success but also impacts the job market and working conditions for other Australian workers.

International students form a significant part of Australia's educational fabric. Their contribution is invaluable; however, their rights within the workplace need safeguarding. With the burgeoning gig economy, the taxi and rideshare industries have become popular employment options for students. Unfortunately, the lack of stringent oversight regarding their working hours has led to situations where many are working beyond the stipulated limits, often due to economic pressures and employers' demands.

This overwork can have serious repercussions. Studies have shown that excessive work hours can lead to academic struggles, mental health issues, and physical exhaustion, impeding their capacity to perform optimally both academically and professionally. Furthermore, pushing international students to exceed legal work limits may result in reduced job opportunities for Australian citizens and residents, as businesses may exploit these students' willingness to work longer hours for lower pay.

The solution is clear. We urgently need effective monitoring and enforcement mechanisms that ensure all employers in the taxi and rideshare sectors adhere to legal work-hour policies concerning international students. This could include regular audits, stricter penalties for non-compliance, and educational campaigns to inform both students and employers about legal responsibilities and rights.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for the protection of international students' rights and a fairer job market in Australia. Let us push for change that ensures a balanced work-play life for international students and equitable job opportunities for all workers in our country. Please sign and help us create a more just and supportive work environment for everyone.
