Improve WES Commuter Rail service in Tigard, OR

The Issue

I may not be a resident of Tigard, Oregon, but I strongly believe in the immense potential that the WES Commuter Rail holds for the area. As cities around the world have shown, efficient and well-serviced commuter rail systems can significantly reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents.

The current WES Commuter Rail service operates with limited train cars and lacks weekend service, making it inaccessible for many who rely on public transportation. Expanding the WES Commuter Rail to include weekend services and ensuring each train has at least three cars will provide a viable and effective transit solution for Tigard’s commuters.

Recent studies in other metropolitan areas reveal that commuter rail, when properly serviced and extended, cuts down personal vehicle reliance drastically. For instance, cities like San Francisco and Boston have successfully implemented similar solutions with their BART and MBTA systems, respectively. Imagine the possibilities for Tigard if similar measures were adopted!

By extending WES operations to a seven-day schedule and equipping the trains with additional cars, the strain on Tigard’s roadways could be alleviated. This would not only make daily commutes smoother for residents but also help cut down on emissions, contributing to a greener, more sustainable environment.

Additionally, improved transit can uplift economies by making commuting simpler for workers and by attracting tourists who seek convenient ways to explore the city on weekends. More cars per train accommodate more passengers, allowing families, tourists, and daily riders much-needed comfort and availability.

We urge the local government and transit authorities to consider this move which has the backing of evidence-driven success from other cities. It’s time for Tigard to advance its public transportation system with these realistic and necessary changes.
