The Issue

Many of us grew up visiting Brookfield Zoo - it's a cherished part of our childhood memories in Chicago. Lately, however, some disturbing signs of animal distress and poor welfare have been noticed. While the administration is reportedly spending $66+ million on new exhibits, their existing animals are in critical need of attention, care, and improved living conditions.

Heartbreakingly, the polar bear and sloth bear display alarming repetitive pacing behavior - a common indicator of psychological stress, often associated with limited space or poor living conditions. According to a study published in the Journal of Applied Animal Behavior, this behavior is particularly prevalent in carnivores with large home ranges, which suggests that their needs are not being adequately met in their current environment.

Furthermore, seals and sea lions are forced to swim in deplorable enclosures, easily among the filthiest I've ever seen. Basic cleanliness should not be something an animal in captivity should be deprived of.

It's clear that these creatures are not receiving proper care, with appalling effects on their welfare and mental health.

Brookfield Zoo has always been an integral part of our community, and we owe it to these animals to ensure they live a life that's as close to natural as possible. We ask the management of Brookfield Zoo to step up and ensure improved conditions for these beloved animals. Now is the time for change. Help these animals get the attention, love, and care they need. Please sign this petition.
