Improve Ventilation for Safer Events at O2 Academy Brixton

The Issue

In August 2022 I had an unforgettable experience at the O2 Academy in Brixton, but for all the wrong reasons. I passed out at the Megan Thee Stallion concert due to poor air quality and lack of ventilation. This was my first time at this venue and I was shocked. As an avid concert-goer, I've attended countless events before and I love being in the moshpits but I've never passed out. Despite my efforts to reach out to the venue management afterwards, explaining my experience and expressing the urgent need for better ventilation, nothing was changed.

Fast forward to June 2025, I attended the O2 Academy again to see Lil Tecca. The situation has not improved. The air was stifling, it was ridiculously hot with no ventilation making it hard to breathe, people were passing out all around me. The show had to be stopped several times as staff urged us to take two steps back and make space for those affected by the lack of proper ventilation. Staff at the barriers fanned concert goers with paper fans. This is ridiculous. The poor conditions don’t just hinder our enjoyment; they pose a real threat to our safety.

The tragic crowd crush incident at the Asake concert in late 2022 showed the urgency of improving the venue's conditions. The venue only made changes to security after lives were lost. Why does it take a tragedy to make a change?

The current air quality at the venue is unacceptable and poses health risks. There are multiple complaints about the lack of ventilation/AC on social media from concert goers that attended events at this venue, to name a few: Chappell Roan, Denzel Curry and Teyana Taylor.

We demand an immediate investigation into and improvement of the air ventilation system within the O2 Academy. This change is crucial to ensure that all concert-goers can enjoy events in a safe and comfortable environment. Proper ventilation will not only enhance the concert experience but, most importantly, protect everyone’s well-being.

I urge the management of O2 Academy Brixton to prioritize this issue before more incidents occur. Enhancing the ventilation system is a tangible step towards providing a safer experience for all. If nothing is done, I believe the venue needs to be shut down. Its current design and air quality is not suitable for live music events.
