Improve traffic safety measures in Massachusetts

Improve traffic safety measures in Massachusetts

The Issue

I have seen firsthand the devastating effects that unsafe driving conditions can have on a family. Traffic safety in Massachusetts is not prioritized as it should be, leading to tragic accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists. It is heart-wrenching to witness the impact such incidents have on loved ones left behind, knowing it could have been prevented with adequate safety measures.

Pedestrians and cyclists are particularly vulnerable on Massachusetts roads. Many of them face the risk of being hit simply because they are not visible or safe in poorly lit or inadequately maintained areas. On the other hand, distracted and impaired drivers fail to notice pedestrians, which further exacerbates the issue. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2019 alone, there were 6,205 pedestrian fatalities across the United States, with Massachusetts contributing a significant share to this distressing statistic.

There is an urgent need for legislative action to enhance traffic safety in Massachusetts. This can be achieved through increased funding for better street lighting, improved crosswalks, and bike lanes that protect cyclists. Additionally, public awareness campaigns on the importance of road safety for both drivers and pedestrians can aid in reducing these tragic occurrences. Authorities must enforce stricter penalties for drivers caught driving under the influence or while distracted, ensuring that roads are safer for all users.

I urge the local government and relevant authorities to prioritize this issue before more lives are needlessly lost. By signing this petition, you are supporting a safer Massachusetts, where pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers can coexist without fear. Together, we can work towards creating safer roads for everyone. Please join me in demanding change now.
