The Issue
As a concerned resident of the Whitehall community, I am witnessing a growing risk to safety at the intersection of Dorchester Road and Netherby Lane. This issue has increasingly jeopardized the lives of my family and neighbors, following the development of a recent commercial property. The new entrance and exit point opening onto Netherby Lane was unexpected and has significantly heightened traffic congestion and potential hazards in our neighborhood.
The intersection has become a daily concern for many of us in Whitehall. The added traffic not only disrupts our daily commutes and peace but also endangers pedestrians and cyclists who use the area. The risk of accidents has risen, especially during peak hours, as drivers navigate a junction not designed for such high density of vehicles. We have already witnessed numerous near-misses, and it is only a matter of time before a serious accident will occur.
Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration highlights the critical importance of addressing safety issues in high-traffic areas, noting that a well-planned traffic management system can reduce accidents by up to 40%. To prevent potential tragedies, immediate action is necessary.
We urge the City Council Representatives of North Charleston to:
1. Conduct a comprehensive traffic study at the intersection of Dorchester Road and Netherby Lane to understand the full impact of the increased traffic.
2. Implement traffic-calming measures such as additional signage, traffic signals, or a roundabout to enhance safety.
3. Engage with residents and local businesses to gather feedback and insights on their experiences and suggestions for improvement.
Our community is relying on the City Council to prioritize our safety and take swift action to resolve this pressing issue. We want to ensure that our neighborhood remains a safe and pleasant place to live, free from the threat of preventable accidents.
Please sign this petition to demonstrate our unified demand for immediate intervention and improved traffic safety in the Whitehall community. Together, we can make positive changes to protect our community and the people we care about.
