The Issue

This is a petition born out of fear and frustration. There have been two instances in the last few months where I, a law-abiding pedestrian, have nearly been a casualty of inadequate traffic law enforcement. While attempting to cross at the intersection of East 63rd Street and York Avenue, cars from both North and South refused to stop turning, completely ignoring the traffic rules. I was unable to cross for the entire time I had the light due to the disregard for human life of the drivers. I have also seen numerous pedestrians get hit by cars on this intersection over the years. It is honestly psychopathic to have no regard for the lives of pedestrians trying to get to or from home. Families with young children and elderly people live in the buildings on this intersection and face these dangers daily.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated issue. I have already complained twice about this corner to 311 and NYPD in the last few months but have not noticed improvement. The current traffic conditions at this entrance to the FDR provide no repercussions for cars blatantly and unlawfully violating traffic rules and endangering pedestrians. Without effective traffic law oversight, regulations, and consequences, this dangerous problem persists and pedestrians have to choose between getting to where they need to be or risk dying.

Vehicular-pedestrian deaths and injuries have increased in NYC to a record breaking 193 people killed in just the first 9 months of 2024 in what is being called a public health crisis. Serious injuries in Manhattan alone increased 16% since last year. This glaring figure can be drastically reduced with better traffic management and stricter enforcement of laws.

Therefore, I am urging the city’s traffic management authority to prioritize the safety of pedestrians by enhancing traffic law regulations and enforcement at the entrance to the FDR at East 63rd Street and York Avenue. It’s high time we ensured the safety of our fellow New Yorkers. Please, sign this petition and help usher in much-needed change.
