Improve track and field media coverage - oppose prohibitive paywalls (FloTrack, e.g.)
The Issue
FloTrack has announced that it will hold exclusive coverage of the Diamond League in the United States and U.S. Territories beginning in 2025.
This decision is the most recent data point in a disheartening trend. Legacy media, leagues, and the governing organizations of track and field have consistently done disservice to athletes and fans.
The agreement between FloTrack and Wanda Diamond League effectively raises the cost of Diamond League viewership for fans in the United States. Per Citius Mag, "The Diamond League, which is currently televised on NBC’s networks and streamed on Peacock ($5.99/month or $59.99/year), will move to Flotrack ($29.99/month or $149.99/year) starting in 2025." For many fans, this price is prohibitive. For athletes, this means less opportunity to be recognized.
Our sport is driven by a passionate fanbase that values equity and support for athletes. These athletes deserve to be seen and to reap the benefits of their hard work. The Track and Field community will be unable to grow as long as outdated interests, organizations, and structures are permitted to cast a shadow on these values.
This petition, while created in reaction to recent announcements of poor decisions in track and field media, reflects a general demand among track and field fans and athletes for better leadership in the sport.
Signatories of this petition call for the following actions:
1. Wanda Sports Group, FloTrack GM Ryan Fenton: Remove the prohibitive/exclusive paywall to Diamond League coverage. Remove barriers to athlete recognition and fan support. Make your plans more cost-effective and invest in better fee structures that will allow fans to affordably engage with the sport.
2. USATF CEO Max Siegel, USATF President Vin Lananna: Use your position to call for improved general treatment of athletes and fans. Partner with the athletes and the community to provide a voice to those at the heart of the sport. Do not prohibit, and do actively support more direct channels for athletes to share in the market for their viewership.
3. World Athletics/IAAF President Seb Coe: Discontinue support for Wanda Group and FloTrack's media deal for Diamond League coverage. Call for progressive action among stakeholders to investigate the needs and desires of athletes and fans.
