The Issue

Living in Livonia, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges posed by prolonged icy conditions on our residential roads. The road outside my home has been covered in ice for over a week, experiencing minimal melting but frequently re-freezing. This situation has made vehicular travel difficult and poses a significant risk of falls when navigating the curb and street, particularly when taking trash and recycling to the pickup point.

The issue extends beyond just my street; the safety of our entire Livonia community is compromised when public residential roads remain icy and unsalted for extended periods. Allowing roads to sit untreated is not just an inconvenience, but a genuine safety hazard that threatens the well-being of residents, potentially leading to unnecessary injuries.

Statistics from similar sized cities show that timely salting of residential roads greatly reduces the number of vehicular accidents and pedestrian injuries during winter months. Inadequate road salt management has direct implications on community safety, increasing risks for drivers and pedestrians alike.

I urge the city council of Livonia to reassess their budget to prioritize the timely salting of residential roads. Our city budgets must reflect the need to manage and maintain our roads effectively during the winter months. Implementing a strategic approach to road salting not only ensures safety but also enhances the quality of life for all Livonians.

Together, we can urge our city leaders to make the necessary changes to protect our community from the dangers of icy roads. I kindly ask the residents of Livonia and concerned citizens alike to join in this advocacy to make our streets safer. Please sign this petition to help ensure that the timely salting of Livonia's residential roads becomes a priority moving forward. Your support and signature can make a difference in pushing for a safer environment for all of us.
