Improve the Treatment and Aftercare for Injured British Soldiers.
The Issue
Our brave soldiers risk their lives to protect our country, but when they are injured, they are often left to fend for themselves. This is a personal story of a family friend who served in the British army. severely injured in an explosion and spent a significant amount of time in various hospitals. Upon discharge, was was left with paralysis on one side of the body and no support from the very institution that they had dedicated their life to serve.
This is not an isolated incident. Many soldiers leave service due to medical reasons or on their own terms only to find themselves without suitable housing or adequate care. As we face a rise in the housing market, securing suitable accommodation becomes even more challenging for these veterans.
The government has failed these heroes by not providing enough support after they leave service. It's time we demand change.
We need laws that ensure every soldier leaving service - be it medically or otherwise - has access to suitable housing and necessary care services. We owe them this much for their sacrifices.
This is a personal plea on behalf of a family I know well, who are enduring the harsh realities of life after service. They are among many soldiers from the Commonwealth who cross waters in search of a better life, only to face hardships when they are deemed unfit for work. These brave individuals put their lives on the line with the promise of a fresh start and yet, when they can no longer serve, they find themselves struggling to make ends meet.
It's disheartening that despite reaching out to multiple agencies including Mr Sunak and Mr Heappay, there has been no response or assistance provided. It's time we address this issue head-on and ensure that our ex-service personnel receive the support they deserve.
According to The Royal British Legion (2019), approximately 6% of UK veterans experience unemployment post-service - twice as high as civilian unemployment rates. This statistic becomes even more alarming considering many veterans also face physical or mental health issues due to their service.
We call upon our government officials and relevant agencies to review policies regarding support for ex-service personnel from the Commonwealth deemed unfit for work. We must provide them with suitable housing adapted for their needs and ensure that they have access to necessary resources during this challenging transition period in their lives.
Footballers get paid so much money to kick a ball around but the people who give up their lives to save ours get very little to sustain themselves and their families.
Help us make this change by signing this petition today! Let's show our veterans that we stand with them and will fight for their rights just as fiercely as they have fought for ours. A go fund me link will be added to help the family start somewhere. Every little helps.
